  • Descrição: With respect to the Latin Accusativus-cum-Infinitivo construction two conflicting proposals have been made. In the traditional one the AcI is viewed as originating from a pattern with a nominal object, whereas in a recent Transformational proposal the accusative nominal is described as a Raised Object. In this paper it is, by various arguments, shown that neither of the two analyses can satisfactorily account for all grammatical properties of the AcI. It is concluded that the accusative nominal should not be described as an object of the main verb, whether in the underlying structure or in the surface structure of the sentences under consideration.
