Descrição: This article is the subject of scientific study environmental function of land, from the provision contained in art. 186, II, of the Constitution of 1988. With a view to understanding of the subject, the article is divided into two distinct parts. The first one deals with the overall concept of the social function of land, pointing also the historical context of the emergence of this institute in the Brazilian legal system, the second is concerned, specifically the environmental function, pointing to the opinion of several scholars of the subject.
