  • Descrição: Archaeological reconstructions of the past are influenced by the fundamental structures of specific archaeologies. Even if this seems self-evident, few archaeologists start their work systematically with an analysis of the theory and method they use. Histories of archaeology have the potential to lay bare these unuttered assumptions. Not all already-written historiographies, however, can simply be used for such epistemological task. This article illustrates with a historiographical study of the origins of the terramare, the large, embanked Bronze Age settlements of the Central Po Plain (Northern Italy), that paradigmatic and presentist research histories can lead to arrogant conclusions or the simple confirmation of current models. For critical reassessments, it is recommended to go back without prejudice to the sources and, instead of discrediting entire models, unravel their single assumptions. When these are compared with the international literature, historiography can really form a short-cut to a more universal, eclectic and theoretically explicit archaeology.
