  • Descrição: In 2012, 14 million persons worldwide were diagnosed with cancer and 8 million deaths were related to cancer, making this disease one of the most important disease burdens. Dietary patterns, and the related risk factor body weight, are among the cancer risk factors showing the most obvious differences among different parts of the world. Cancers of the breast, colorectum and endometrium are mostly related to overweight and obesity, and colorectal cancer further to high intake of red meat and low intake of fibre‐rich foods, especially whole grains. Whole grains have attracted especial attention as an important contributor to dietary fibre, but also as a source of many other substances with potential relevance in cancer prevention. Several mechanisms have been suggested as responsible for a preventive effect of the mammalian lignans on colorectal cancer. Theories on beneficial effects of whole grains in cancer prognosis have been out forward, especially with regard to prostate and breast cancer.
