  • Descrição: When signalers and receivers have divergent or opposing interests, signal reliability may be maintained via costs to the signaler. Costs can be divided into receiver‐independent and receiver‐dependent costs. The former generally take the form of developmental, production, or maintenance costs, whereas the latter involve increased vulnerability to or increased retaliation from receivers. Both general types of costs have intuitive connections to the functional capacities of individuals, yet this association has not been synthesized. A performance‐based approach to signaling costs is useful in several ways. First, receiver‐dependent costs depend on male resource‐holding potential, or fighting ability, and functional traits may be good measures of these aspects of male quality. Second, taking a functional approach may reveal direct performance costs of signals via biomechanical limitations imposed by signals or via functional trade‐offs with other traits. Finally, compensation for detrimental performance effects of signals may obfuscate predicted relationships between signals and proxies for fitness, requiring investigators to study potential compensatory traits simultaneously with signal design and male quality.
