Descrição:
The figure of General Meredith Read appears once and only once in Debussy's biographies, named as the dedicatee of the composer's "Marche écossaise." Who was this mysterious general and what was the nature of Debussy's relationship with him? Before 1890, when the "Marche écossaise" was composed, Debussy had typically dedicated his works to special performers (such as Madame Vasnier or Madame Émile Deguingand), teachers (such as Émile Durand or Ernest Guiraud), colleagues (such as Paul Dukas or René Chansarel), or loyal patrons (such as Madame von Meck or Étienne Dupin), all of whom he knew well. How does General Meredith Read fit into this context? What were the unique circumstances behind Debussy's one-off composition? These questions are addressed in this study, which is based on a careful examination of over eighty-five boxes of Read's substantial personal archives. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
