  • Descrição: During his presidential campaign ahead of the 2014 election, Joko Widodo has been using the narratives that support the maritime sector's resurgence. However, Indonesia still has to deal with classic problems stemming from illegal practices, unreported unregulated fishing (IUU fishing), in which marine resources that should be enjoyed by the Indonesian people are stolen and exploited by foreign vessels illegally. This research aims to elaborate on Indonesia's foreign policy under President Joko Widodo's administration in resolving Illegal, Unreported, Unregulated Fishing (IUU fishing) practices by foreign vessels in 2014-2019. Using a qualitative approach, the current study applies the concept of the Rational Actor Model introduced by Graham T. Allison. Our study finds that President Joko Widodo's prominent foreign policy to resolve the IUU fishing problem was sinking the foreign vessels. This approach is deemed as a relevant and rational policy for Indonesia to create a deterrent effect. It also contributes to reinforcing Indonesia's identity and sovereignty as a maritime country.
