Julius Meyer wrote the memories of his imprisonment in Buchenwald concentration camp in 1940, after he had fled from Nazi Germany to England. The lawyer from Frankfurt am Main had been arrested by the Gestapo on November 12, 1938, in the immediate aftermath of the November Pogrom. Together with more than 2,500 Jewish men from his hometown, he was deported to Buchenwald.¹ In the course of the winter of 1938–1939, the catastrophic conditions that prevailed in the camp, and brutal illtreatment inflicted by the SS, caused the deaths of hundreds of Jewish inmates.² Among the victims was the chronicler’s
