  • Descrição: This volume of historical sociology, complete with an epilogue on the prospects for the continued success of capitalism, traces the shifts in the relationship between capital accumulation & state formation over a 700-year period. Social theory, comparative history, & historical narrative are utilized to provide an account of the structures & agencies that have shaped the course of world history during this time. Following Fernand Braudel, it is argued that the history of capitalism has unfolded as a succession of "long centuries" -- ages during which a hegemonic power using a combination of economic & political networks secured control over an expanding world-economic space. The beginnings, rise, & unraveling of the links forged between capital, state power, & geopolitics by hegemonic classes & states are explored. The changing fortunes of Florentine, Venetian, Genoese, Dutch, English, & American capitalism are explained from the perspective that a specific logic governed the concentration of power & eventual surrender of control over the strategic sites of commercial, financial, & political power. Offered in conclusion is an analysis of the forces that have shaped & are now poised to undermine the US's world power. Four Chpts are accompanied by a Preface, an Introduction, & an Epilogue: Can Capitalism Survive Success? (1) The Three Hegemonies of Historical Capitalism. (2) The Rise of Capital. (3) Industry, Empire, and the "Endless" Accumulation of Capital. (4) The Long Twentieth Century. 24 Figures, 425 References. V. Rios
