  • Descrição: This chapter discusses the various functions of the brain. It begins by detailing the nerve-centers of the frog and the resulting movements. The general notion of hemispheres is explored. It then discusses how the hemispheres "learn." The chapter describes phrenology as Gall's way of explain of in detail how the brain could subserve our mental operations. It then details the localization of functions in the hemispheres. The chapter questions whether consciousness is limited to the hemisphere. The restitution of function is explored. The author concludes that all the centers, in all animals, whilst they are in one aspect mechanisms, probably are, or at least once were, organs of consciousness in another, although the consciousness is doubtless much more developed in the hemispheres than it is anywhere else.
