Descrição: This article examines the evolution of English midwifery language from that of the divinely ordained profession represented in fifteenth-century texts, to a sixteenth-century vanguard of the new national church in England, and finally to a literary character and trope emerging at the turn of the seventeenth century. It explores the seeming contradiction between, on the one hand, the traditional image of early modern midwives as elderly, uneducated, or even evil, and on the other, the historical early modern English midwife, who has been shown by historians of medicine to have been more often a church official, an experienced obstetrician, and a reliable legal witness. By examining literary depictions of midwives as well as medical and religious texts, this article will demonstrate that the source of this apparent contradiction lies in the development and proliferation of a rich, inventive, and often self-contradicting midwifery rhetoric during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. In the course of this development, the midwife moves from a position of absolute spoken authority to one whose authority is severely circumscribed through the introduction of male-authored, prescriptive language, a change which, in combination with the proliferation of comedic and purely rhetorical usages, would allow later generations to rewrite the early modern midwife as a figure of fun and ignorance.
