  • Descrição: Part of the series Studies in Contemporary German Social Thought (Thomas McCarthy, general editor), this text presents articles & essays, translated by Barbara Fultner, that were originally published in German in Vorstudien und Ergunzungen zur Theorie des communikativen Hadelns (1984). An intersubjective approach to social theory characterized by a concern with the notions of communication & meaning is offered. Several advantages to using speech act theory in developing social theory are identified including the capacity to differentiate between the illocutionary & prepositional forms of a speech act. The rejection of objective & subjective social scientific models & support for a communicative paradigm in analyzing social interactions are discussed. The need for creating a theory of communicative action that is intersubjective in nature is stressed; in addition, it is asserted that such a conceptualization of communicative action must be able to account for norm-oriented & intentional actions. After covering the notion of interactive competence, it is argued that the development of interactive competence is related to moral decisions & actual behaviors; nonetheless, the need to distinguish moral decisions & actual behaviors is emphasized. Moreover, it is maintained that intersubjectivity & subjectivity are connected since a subject's intentions are structured intersubjectively. This book contains an Introduction by the translator & 3 Chpts. 3 Tables. J. W. Parker
