  • Descrição: The idea of flow control by active gas injection or energy addition to the flow appeared decades ago. At the beginning of the 20th century, in 1914, the Russian scientist E.A. Shilovskii performed experiments on drag reduction for blunted projectiles by burning phosphorus at the tip of an aerodynamic spike. In 1946, K. Oswatitch made some theoretical estimates of the gas-dynamic effects caused by external heating. In the 1960s, the problem of sonic boom noise reduction was considered in the context of the development of supersonic aviation; an electrodynamic method for decreasing sonic-boom intensity was examined.
