  • Descrição: The most recent glacial ice retreated from greater Yellowstone between 13,000 and 14,000 years ago, opening the area to habitation. This region is rich in resources needed by people to make a living: animals, edible and medicinal plants, sources of stone for producing tools. Obsidian was particularly important because it was easily knapped into desired shapes and was widely used. Yellowstone contains many natural sources of obsidian, each with its own unique combination of trace elements permitting accurate identification of the toolstone source material.
