  • Descrição: The utility of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) in art and archaeology investigations was reviewed. Analytical techniques which are non-destructive as well as applicable in situ are invaluable for works of art. LIBS has been reported to have been used in the analysis of pigments on a Byzantine icon. In LIBS and estimated 20-200 ng of material is taken from a typical crater 1 to 10 µm deep and 100 µm wide, a hole invisible to the naked eye. Pigments and their chemical composition successfully determined by LIBS are tabulated.
