  • Descrição: There are gaps in David Stoll's reading on the issue of Rigoberta Menchu's testimony, and they are serious in view of his attacks on the scholarship of others. Testimonio can be seen as a genre characterized by hybridity, and it has more similarities with literature than with documentary. Stoll emphasizes insignificant details, yet there were atrocities carried out in the attempts to suppress guerrillas in Guatemala. They include 150,000 disappeared and a further 150,000 killed, almost all being Mayan and noncombatants. The testimony of Rigoberta Menchu helped to change this by calling attention to the atrocities.
