  • Descrição: Analyzes changes in Fortaleza, the capital of the state of Ceara, Brazil, that made the city more tourist friendly than ever, giving it a more positive appeal to elide the poverty & inequality that had previously dominated the city's image. A brief summary of the development of Ceara begins with the early settlers to the arrival of poverty & misery brought by refugees of numerous droughts in the early 20th century. An examination of the economic development of the region follows, tracing the gradual growth over time through government intervention & changes. The next section covers political change in Ceara -- the political party trends, changes in public administration, & the end of patrimonialist governing. The effect of changes in urban design & city development in Fortaleza to create a new image for a "new Ceara" is addressed in closing. 46 References. M. James
