  • Descrição: THE GULF CRISIS WAS TO A LARGE EXTENT A CONFLICT ABOUT OIL. THIS ARTICLE ASSESSES THE IMPACT OF THE GULF CRISIS ON ONE OF THE MAJOR OIL EXPORTING CARTELS, THE ORGANIZATION OF PETROLEUM EXPORTING COUNTRIES (OPEC). IT CONCLUDES THAT OPEC'S FORTUNES, ALREADY ON THE WANE, WERE SIGNIFICANTLY DAMAGED BY THE GULF CRISIS. NOT ONLY DID THE CRISIS EAT AWAY AT THE "CAMARADERIE" WHICH BOUND OPEC MEMBERS TOGETHER, IT ALSO DISTURBED THE OUTPUT DISTRIBUTION BETWEEN MEMBERS. IT ALSO INCREASED THE POLITICAL DEPENDENCE OF THE ARAB GULF COUNTRIES ON THE WESTERN POWERS IN GENERAL, AND ON THE UNITED STATES IN PARTICULAR. THIS RESULTED IN FURTHER INHIBITION ON OPEC ACTING OPENLY AS A CARTEL BY ATTEMPTING TO MANAGE OIL PRICES OR PRODUCTION.
