  • Descrição: Examines the concept of the "self" in globalization, particularly in 20th-century India & the People's Republic of China. It is argued that the self will challenge international politics that choose to ignore ethnic, cultural, & gender-based groups, noting that the rise of the self is a major component in violent upheaval. India's term for self-rule, swaraj, is considered in the context of colonization, & political, cultural, & diplomatic similarities & differences between India & China are addressed. Identity & recognition of the self are discussed at the national, supranational, & subnational levels, as well as corresponding political contexts. Restructuring of hierarchies to encompass all groups & individuals, enabling recognition of various assertions of the self & reducing violent conflict, is recommended. L. Collins
