  • Descrição: A new htr gene in Escherichia coli involved in the ability to grow at high temperatures was characterized through a transposon-induced mutant. The gene was designated as htrD and was mapped at 19.3 minutes in the E. coli chromosome. Inactivation of htrD resulted in sensitivity to high temperature, sensitivity to hydrogen peroxide and to growth inhibition in the presence of cysteine. Examination of cysteine transport rates showed a higher rate of transport in the mutant. The growth-inhibiting effect of cyteine was reduced by osmotic shock, indicating the involvement of periplasmic protein in the affected system.
