  • Descrição:

The outbreak of the First World War was accompanied in Germany by the emergence of a "philosophy of war" which contrasted polemically the "Ideas of 1914" with the "Ideas of 1789". This essay examines whether a similar discussion existed in Germany immediately prior to the Second World War and comes to the conclusion that this was not so. Not only was there little enthusiasm for war in September 1939, there was also no "intellectual war service" of philosophers, economists and historians. Subsequent apologies for the war of conquest waged by the German armies, and for the new Groβraumordnung were more a retrospective interpretation than an explanation of objectives. Thus, the German intelligentsia has been more readily able to accept the defeat of 1944-45 than of 1918-19.
