Descrição: When John P. Goddard used the term 'numismatic mutants' it was to highlight the unique potential of brockage coins for understanding coin production techniques based on observations of the resulting anomalous coins. Brockage is a term given to any coin with an error, but it is generally used to denote a coin having a design in relief on the obverse and an incuse of the same design on the reverse. These 'mutant' coins are accidentally produced when a struck coin adheres to the (mostly upper, i.e., reverse) die and goes unnoticed during the subsequent minting process. Instead of the production process being halted for a considerable amount of time, coins could technically still be minted by deliberately 'sticking'6a coin on the damaged die and using this makeshift device as a 'pseudo-die' to continue striking coins, albeit brockages.
