  • Descrição: Objective: to characterize the reasons for hospitalization of the elderly from 2015 to 2019 in Roraima, Brazil. Methods: descriptive epidemiological study, under temporal analysis of data from the Hospital Information System regarding hospitalizations of the elderly. Age groups, period of hospitalization, gender and diagnoses were evaluated, and relative hospitalization risks and variations in the ranking of hospitalization causes were calculated. Results: 23,844 hospitalizations among elderly people in the state were recorded. Diseases of the circulatory, respiratory and digestive systems represented the main groups associated with hospitalizations (44.2% of the total). The population aged 80 or over had the highest relative hospitalization risks. Pneumonia, diabetes mellitus, heart failure and hospitalization for exams and investigation were the diagnoses with the highest positions in the ranking of specific causes. During the period, there was a predominance of hospitalizations in men. Conclusion: The particularities observed should guide future measures and additional analyzes, enabling strategic and systematic planning.
