  • Descrição: The most recent survey carried out in the catacombs of St. Callixtus, in the Roman suburbium on the Appian Way, on behalf of the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archaeology, have revealed still unknown aspects about the use of catacombs as a burial place during the early Middle Ages (Bisconti and Braconi 2015).¹ It is known, in fact, that the catacombs are no longer used as a cemetery since the end of the fifth century and evidence for later burials is rare and does not go beyond the seventh century (Petrucci 1995: 49-50; Carletti 1998: 66-67; Fiocchi Nicolai 2001: 132-136; Nieddu
