  • Descrição: Until well into the twentieth century the best pupils of catholic colleges were traditionally rewarded with prize books during a ceremony at the end of the school year. In May 1898 the bishop of Bruges distributed a list of prize books to inspire the boards of the West Flemish diocesan colleges. This contribution analyses fifteen biographies and edifying stories on that list to sketch the ideal catholic pupil. Because of their explicit morality religious prize books are a valuable source for the analysis of ideologies and idealized images. Here the focus lies on the gender role of the story’s protagonist. The article examines what a schoolboy had to do and think to be considered as a good catholic (young) man. Masculinity within nineteenth century Catholicism is often studied within the context of a feminised church and the strategies it employed to reinforce its social position. The authors of the prize books and the bishopric of Bruges felt very strong about some virtues that can be placed on the feminine side of classical gender constructions. However, idealized images of masculinity in the books can hardly be characterised as entirely passive. The ideal catholic man was wholly masculine. Moreover, the concept of gender can be extended beyond the binary opposition between the sexes. The age of both the protagonists and the reading public of the books can be taken into the analysis. The interpretation of masculinity is indeed partly affected by its position on the crossroads of other social differences. Accordingly, this article calls for a recognition of diversity in Gender Studies in order to go beyond essentialist conceptions of masculinity and femininity.
