  • Descrição: Collagen diseases share similarities with autoimmune disorders. This chapter discusses collagen diseases and its features. Some of these diseases are lupus erythematosus (LE), systemic LE (SLE), discoid LE (DLE), LE profundus, scleroderma, and eosinophilic fasciitis. SLE is characterized by cutaneous and systemic involvement. It may present with overlapping symptoms that also meet the diagnostic criteria for other collagen diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and scleroderma. Some patients with DLE may meet the criteria for SLE. In most cases of DLE, the skin is the only organ involved. In cases of SLE complicated with antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (APS), erythema on the cheek, DLE or photosensitivity may occur. When the characteristic symptoms of Sjogren syndrome are present and are unaccompanied by symptoms suggestive of other collagen diseases, it is referred to as primary Sjogren syndrome. Secondary Sjogren syndrome occurs in association with other collagen diseases such as SLE.
