  • Descrição: In Norway, International Relations has been seen from the outside, as a sub-field of American-dominated Political Science, coming into its own during the 1960s. In this article, we discuss the emergence and early institutionalisation of International Relations in Norway during the first half of the 20th century from the inside. Adding an immanent historical dimension, firstly brings to light how the connection to Political Science and the US is historically contingent, since the earlier institutionalisations were tied to History and International Law, with contacts mainly to the British IR discipline. Secondly, the historical dimension throws new light on the interconnectedness between the production of knowledge about international relations and foreign policy practice, due to the personal and professional overlap in the relevant circles. Whereas the International Relations discipline of the last 50 years has lost most of the earlier connections to History, International Law and the British tradition, the tight connections between research and practice remain to this day.
