  • Descrição: Evincing remarkable powers of observation and memory, Polo supplies information about many places which are otherwise unknown.1 Yet, given the fact that his account was written with a ghost-writer, years and in some cases decades after he saw or first heard about the places described, only to be transmitted through careless and inexpert scribes, Polo's information itself is sufficiently problematic that corroboration from other sources is essential. For all of these reasons, western or southwestern Mongolia accords with Polo's description far better than any location in Xinjiang.14 But within that area, it would be hard to find any place that could be described as having "many cities and castles." The information in Table 2 suggests that in these sparsely inhabited regions, a day's journey averaged about 43.5 kilometers, which accords with Polo's "mile" being about a kilometer.
