Descrição:
A paper presented at a conference entitled "Roger Bastide and the Multiple: Cultures, Intercultures, and Heterocultures" held 7-14 Sept 1992 in Cerisy-la-Salle, France. Analysis of Bastide's Estudos afro-brasileiros ([Afro-Brazilian Studies] 1973) & other works explores his hypothesis that religious influence on creative writing is conditioned by the social context. His treatment of two forms of nostalgia directly related to social conditions provides a good case study of his overall methods. In his criticism of romantic & symbolist poetry he maintained a strong affinity to Africa, whose inspiration was discernible in the Afro-Brazilian poetry of the turn of the century. Although he starts from an antiethnocentric position, ethnic concerns weakened to the point where the modernist movement of the 1920s celebrated the ascendancy of the mixed-race population of Brazil over European racial purity. Bastide maintained that sociological analysis exceeds the limits of what can be stated explicitly. Thus, in his studies about the imaginary, the essence of the problem is not touched. 20 References.
