Descrição:
This collection of essays on the possibilities for ideological criticism in a postmodern age is based on the proceedings of a conference, "Ideology Critique and Beyond," held on the occasion of Temple U's Twelfth Annual Conference on Discourse Analysis. Leading international scholars from the humanities & social sciences examine a range of issues, eg: the extent to which the emancipatory postmodernist can reject judgmental relativism while championing epistemological relativism, how postmodernism can be turned on itself with critical effect, & postmodern feminist research & pedagogy. The papers in PART II analyze a wide variety of cultural objects & practices, workplace ideology, a study of the lives of Chicago (IL) gang members, & the class-oriented tradition of Marxist ideology critique. Designed for scholars of social theory, social psychology, rhetoric, political theory, & communications, this volume points to the future of critical scholarship in a postmodern era. Published as part of the Inquiries in Social Construction series (Kenneth J. Gergen & John Shotter, series editors), the book is organized into II PARTS, containing 10 Chpts, with an Introduction by the editors. PART I - THE POSTMODERN PROBLEMATIC - offers (1) Richard Harvey Brown -- Reconstructing Social Theory after the Postmodern Critique; (2) Steven E. Cole -- Evading the Subject: The Poverty of Contingency Theory; (3) Kenneth J. Gergen -- The Limits of Pure Critique; & (4) Ian Angus -- Inscription and Horizon: A Postmodern Civilizing Effect? PART II IDEOLOGY CRITIQUE AND CULTURAL STUDIES - includes (5) Patti Lather -- Staying Dumb? Feminist Research and Pedagogy With/in the Postmodern; (6) Herbert W. Simons -- Teaching the Pedagogies: A Dialectical Approach to an Ideological Dilemma; (7) Michael Billig -- Sod Baudrillard! Or Ideology Critique in Disney World; (8) Stanley Deetz -- The New Politics of the Workplace: Ideology and Other Unobtrusive Controls; (9) Dwight Conquergood -- For the Nation! How Street Gangs Problematize Patriotism; & (10) Dana L. Cloud -- 'Socialism of the Mind': The New Age of Post-Marxism. References follow each Chpt. 1 Table. W. Howard
