  • Descrição: The authors discusses the basic physics of acoustics, the principles of sonar systems and their operation. He emphasizes the importance of correct interpretation for, although many fishermen can tell from echo traces what type of fish are below them, it is not yet possible to scientifically quantify this information. So, the author includes a section in laymen's terms on fish as acoustic targets so that an understanding of the physical relationship between the fish and its acoustic signature may help the fisherman to bridge this gap. The use and limitations of fishing echo-sounders, horizontal beam sonars and other types of sonar, which are used at present mainly for research or special purposes are discussed.
