Descrição:
A number of measures have been implemented and approaches undertaken to rebuild Atlantic cod stocks since their widespread collapse in the early 1990s. Most of these measures have had limited success and the stocks have not recovered in any significant way. With the goal of reversing this trend, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) and the Provincial Departments of Fisheries and Aquaculture of New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia, established a working group called the Maritimes Cod Action Recovery Team (MCART). In consultation with the industry, the MCART has developed a strategic vision for the long-term recovery and sustainability of the 4TVn fishing subarea (southern Gulf of St. Lawrence) cod stock. The objective of this document is to set out that vision and to serve as a guide for long-term planning and implementation to make the recovery of the 4TVn cod stock a reality. MCART will subsequently undertake parallel initiatives for the 4VsW and 4Vn resident cod stocks respectively.
