  • Descrição: Zaire '74, as it was named, was billed as an almighty coming-together of black American and black African music (Miriam Makeba being the stand-out from the African side), a homecoming of soul, and there is much talk from the Americans about 'coming home', which - with the benefit of 35 years of hindsight, in which time black American music has become a multi-billion-dollar worldconquering commercial enterprise - can feel gratingly sentimental. Levy-Hinte focuses much of his attention on backstage proceedings, weaving together the dual threads of lighting director Bill McManus's endeavours to get his giant stage set up on time (at one point he utters the appealingly odd line to one of his crew that 'the matrix memory has been out since the end of Cat Stevens') with the arrival by private jet of Ali, Don King, Brown et al., and the coy friend-making of the pan-continental performers. First and foremost, Soul Power is a joyous coming together of personalities, replete with surprising and intimate moments.
