  • Descrição: Corrosion of high-alloy steels in sea water was investigated taking into consideration the biological factors (presence of biofilm and fouling organisms). An enhancing effect of biofilm on local corrosion initiation and its progress as caused by the acceleration of cathodic reaction process were observed. The presence of barnacles was found to contribute to the occurrence of crevice corrosion, especially of the alloy steels which do not contain molybdenum. Opinions on the mechanism of crevice corrosion under barnacles are presented.
