  • Descrição: Many cellular functions and physiological processes are regulated by changes in cytoplasmic Ca2+, and the plasma membrane Na+/Ca2+ exchanger plays a prominent role in Ca2+ homeostasis in many different cell types. Despite rapid advances in our knowledge of the molecular operation of the exchanger, many intriguing issues remain unresolved, and recent discoveries have revealed exciting new concepts. This volume brings together contributions from an interdisciplinary group of distinguished scientists and new young investigators from around the world who focus upon several emerging themes: (1) the relation of molecular structure to transport function; (2) the relation between exchanger isoforms and unique physiological roles; (3) the physiological relevance of molecular regulation; (4) the connection between exchanger localization and physiological function; (5) the role of the Na+/Ca2+ exchanger in disease and as a potential therapeutic target; and (6) the use of transgenic and gene-targeted models to unravel physiological questions.
