Descrição: In 1994, the Texas Alliance for the Mentally Ill (TEXAMI) developed, published, and distributed a detailed guide, in booklet form, about Texas criminal law and procedure with regard to offenders with serious mental illnesses. The book Texas Criminal Procedure and the Offender with Mental Illness (Shannon & Benson, 1994), has been a marked success as an educational tool, not only for family members and consumers, but also for attorneys, judges, and service providers. The TEXAMI effort can certainly be replicated in other states. To that end, this brief report is intended to identify the process TEXAMI undertook to bring the book project to fruition. We hope that other states will be able to pursue similar initiatives.
