  • Descrição: Having begun with the terminal equipment market and moved on to areas such as value-added services, satellite services, and mobile telecommunications, European Union (EU)-level initiatives to introduce competition in the telecommunications industry have reached a dramatic new stage. A commitment to open competition for voice telephony has been agreed to for 1998, with a further few years' extension in the case of some less developed countries and smaller networks. Having identified the introduction of competition in the telecommunications infrastructures as the final major and decisive stage in the EU's program for liberalization and privatization, the EU Commission has now published a Green Paper on the Liberalization of Telecommunications Infrastructure and Cable Television Networks. A workshop organized in the autumn of 1994 by the Network on European Communications Policy and the Peripheral Regions/Smaller Economies addressed the concerns raised by the European telecommunications vision.
