Isolated SnH stretching frequencies have been obtained from i.r. spectra of SnHD 3, MeSnHD 2, EtSnHD 2, Me 2SnHD, Et 2SnHD, Me 3SnH and Et 3SnH. 2ν isSnH frequencies are also reported for Me 2SnHD and Me 3SnH. Two bands separated by 3.6 cm −1 in the case of EtSnHD 2 represent the differing β effects of the methyl group. A close comparison of the SnH data with earlier GeH ones indicates that the conformers predominating in both Et 2SnH 2 and Et 3SnH have all methyl groups gauche to the SnH bonds, in contrast to the situation in analogous GeH compounds. Analysis of the J structure of ν 1 of SnHD 3 at 0.06 cm −1 resolution leads to new values of the band centre and rotational constants, from which r 0 (SnH) = 1.7023 (4) Å. A very small, positive SnH stretch-stretch interaction force constant is found in Me 2SnH 2 (0.0076 mdyn Å −1).
