  • Descrição: The provenance of the coastal sands at the mouth of the Singatoka River is a mountainous interior drainage carved largely from the Tertiary volcano-plutonic orogen of Viti Levu. On the combined evidence of field relations, the human artifacts they contain, and mechanical analyses, the exposed sands are judged to be younger dune and older eolian flat deposits that accumulated within the last 2,500 (?) years during a marine transgression upon a delta margin. The sands are all well-sorted ( S o ∼ 1.25) and positively skewed, but the eolian flat deposits that underlie the modern dunes are coarser grained, more skewed, and tend to have higher kurtosis. The sands are rich in heavy minerals, but the recalculated mean modal composition of nine samples is Q 34F 24L 42. Ancient volcaniclastic sandstones of similar composition were probably derived from similar juvenile tectonic highlands within orogenic belts.
