  • Descrição: This study aimed at diagnosing the alternative conceptions of kinetic energy among ninth grade students before the experimental treatment, and to investigate the effect of using the conceptual change strategies in helping students to acquire of the scientific concept of kinetic energy compared to the traditional method. The sample consisted of (38) ninth grade students, enrolled in two groups in Al-Husineah Primary School for Boys, in the first semester of the academic year 2000/2001, one of the groups was randomly assigned to be the experimental group (n=19) and the other was assinged to be the control group (n=19). An achievement test was constructed and validated. It consisted of (36) items in its final version. A reliability test was conducted using (KR-20) equation, where the stability factor was found to be (0.85). The study revealed that the subjects were familiar with certain alternative conceptions of kinetic energy before the experimental treatment. By using the independent t-test, the results of the study showed that there were statistically significant differences at ([alpha] = 0.05) between the means of the two groups' scores on the achievement test which was applied after the experimental treatment in favor of the experimental group. The study recommended to conduct more studies on alternative conceptions in other science branches. Reprinted by permission of Dirasat
