  • Descrição: The paper examines the Israeli press' complex construction of the mothers in the 'Remedia Affair' (November, 2003). The faulty Remedia baby formula caused the death of three babies and severe disabilities in dozens of others. Coverage was framed as a 'media scandal' aimed at conveying a moral lesson and raised questions about the responsibilities towards the babies and for the harmful act. Various textual analysis tools help us explore the journalistic insinuation that the mothers were culpable in the tragedy for not breastfeeding their babies. We also see a subversive move by the popular press which allowed the mothers to speak out and defend themselves and to demand recognition not just for their children's victimhood but also for their own. The Remedia Affair which occurred in a period of social change for women in Israel fails to reflect this. On the contrary: it was framed as a conservative scandal which took back several steps the significant achievements towards Israeli women's 'liberation'. The case offers unique insights into the media's handling of a `norms violation', and its subsequent reinforcement of those norms. In addition it teaches about the complex relation between myth and reality, about the interrelationship between guilt discourse and victimization discourse, and about the media's role in influencing the desired role and character of the mother in Israeli society.
