Descrição:
To demonstrate the impact of pre-Holocaust regimes, the book centers on the impact of different state policies that either promoted or discouraged the Jews’ integration into the non-Jewish society as well as patterns of state repression.BROADER APPLICABILITY AND IMPLICATIONS Finally, the reviews also present an opportunity to seriously grapple with the question of how, in the context of inter- and multidisciplinary research, social scientists’ abstract models of human behavior can coexist with the historians’ devotion to the specific and unique.[...]Anna Cichopek-Gajraj, a historian, argues that my attempt to conduct a general analysis of ghetto uprisings “comes up short” because large-N research inevitably ignores local dynamics, the attention to which is the book’s key strength. The reviews clearly highlight the potential benefits of interdisciplinary work.[...]Cichopek-Gajraj brings up my failure to properly distinguish between “agency” and “choice” even though cultural scholars extensively discuss the differences between these concepts. While I expected historians and Jewish studies scholars to be uniformly skeptical of my attempts at generalization, the reviews exhibited different approaches to generalization within, rather than across disciplinary boundaries.[...]Samuel Kassow was extremely suspicious about the possibility of “developing broad models and topologies,” while Mark Edele devotes the bulk of his review to demonstrating the applicability of my model to other settings and “action in extremis: in situations of total war, violent dictatorship, and genocide” more broadly.
