  • Descrição: This introduction to the present issue of The Polar Journal positions the articles of its thematic section in relation to recent methodological advancements in the historical analysis of the polar regions. One of these developments is the interdisciplinary approach and another one is the spatial turn in writing history. The latter shift, in particular, draws attention to the extreme field experiences of the Arctic and Antarctic and their climate, environment and human geography. It facilitates tourism studies as well as research on clashing interests in the northern context between military, business, scientific and traditional knowledge systems. This introduction argues that historical research provides not only background information but also methodological insights widely relevant to, for example, the perennial geo-economic debates on international democracy and the natural resources of Antarctica and to contemporary scenario building in the New Arctic, where climate change has heightened the interests in northern navigation routes and off-shore oil and gas extraction.
