This article investigates the strategies Belgian colonial business pursued in the Congo, after independence in 1960. Building on recent strands in postcolonial and business history, the essay understands economic decolonization as a global financial and economic event focusing on business strategies and global ramifications that have hitherto been neglected in research. At the same time, Belgian business maintained its dominance in the Congolese economy for a long time. In a first part it sketches the presence of business interest associations that defended the operations and assets of former colonial business. The article then highlights three sets of strategies employed by former colonial business. Firstly, the creation of systems of political risk management that were in line with international developments. Belgian businesses tried to shape and support (unsuccessfully) multilateral systems of investment dispute settlement and political risk insurance. Secondly, companies pursued an active policy of diversification. Belgian businesses showing a keen interest in valorizing their “colonial” experience in different parts of the world. Finally, the article highlights the use of expatriate labour as to control business affairs, uncovering the deliberate policies and institutions (like overseas social security) that were created in order to maintain an expatriate labour force in the Congo well into the 1970s.
