Descrição:
Being housed in this department rather than the dental school might seem unusual, but Watt says it allows him to pursue “opportunities for broader integrated research and teaching” and fits his view that oral health is inextricably linked to other chronic diseases: “A lot of my work cuts across different areas of public health and recognises that rather than look at a single disease in a silo, many chronic conditions share common pathways and causes.” At UCL, he's focused on solutions to reduce these inequalities, including developing Department of Health guidance on smoking cessation for general dental practitioners and infant feeding and dietary interventions in the community—his model of breastfeeding peer support programmes has been applied across London. To accelerate policy change, he's sought partnerships outside academia, helping to establish the Oral Health Promotion Research Group in 1991, which links researchers with health professionals delivering prevention in the community, and the International Centre for Oral Health Inequalities Research and Policy in 2016, a global network of researchers and policy makers working across 16 countries who are committed to advancing health equity.
