  • Descrição: Four sociological approaches to health & disease are analyzed by means of relevant foreign literature: functional, Marxist, phenomenological, & radical. It is concluded that none of these approaches separately provides the solution for research on the complex relations between health & disease among individuals or social groups. The sociomedical approaches described help to understand the society itself & make it possible to define health policy in concrete conditions, which directly influence health & social results. The picture of health of a population obtained by sociomedical research helps affirm those cultural behavioral patterns that promote health, & aids in the recognition of behavioral patterns that endanger health. The approach can be useful in carrying out the World Health Organization program "Health for All by the Year 2000" & preserving Croatian citizens' mental, social, & reproductive health in a complex time of transition. It can also help doctors & other medical professionals find answers to more complex sociomedical, ethical, & legal public health questions in the 21st century. 33 References.
