  • Descrição: A series of indoor experiments was carried out on conger eel, A. myriaster, to understand the causes of death during transportation from Korea to Japan for exportation, and to know the minimum dissolved oxygen level necessary to sustain the fish for 48 hours during the transportation. (1) For 48 hours, 1 . 31% of the conger eel died in the tank with the D.O. level of 1 . 91 ml/l (1 . 50-2 . 38 ml/l), 8 . 64% died in the tank with D.O. level of 1 . 15 ml/l (0 . 80-1 . 58 ml/l) and 18 . 6% died in the tank with D.O. level of 0 . 88 ml/l (0 . 74-1 . 08 ml/l) respectively. The minimum D.O. level for conger eel in water temperature of 24 . 0 degree C 1 is 2 ml/l or more. (2) The effect of repetition of fluctuation in D.O. level is somewhat conspicuous. The fluctuations of D.O. level were induced artificially by controlling water supply valve from 3 . 76 ml/l (3 . 25-3 . 88 ml/l) for an hour then a sudden down to 2 . 04 ml/l (1 . 72-2 . 32 ml/l) for 30 min. After 8 times repetitions of these fluctuations, D.O. level of 4 . 19 ml/l (4 . 01-4 . 34 ml/l) was maintained for 36 hours. The resulting death ratio was up to 38 . 8% for the 48 hours. This ratio is 4 . 85 times higher than the 8 . 0% of the standard group without the fluctuations of D.O. level. (3) Mortality of 49 . 3% was observed in the tank with the fluctuation of D.O. level from 3 . 78 ml/l (3 . 75-3 . 85 ml/l) for an hour to 2 . 04 ml/l (1 . 74-2 . 18 ml/l) for 30 min, in which case 10 min agitation of tank water with wooden bar and 30 seconds air-exposure were imposed for stimulations to the fish in each low D.O. level of 8 times repetition of fluctuation, and for remaining 36 hours the D.O. level was maintained at 4 . 29 ml/l (3 . 91-4 . 52 ml/l). (4) The effects of stimulation by measurement procedures on the decks of fish transport vessels on mortality during transportation were examined by model experiment, and the result showed that the effects of the stimulation were not direct cause for the fish mortality during the transportion of 48 hours.
