Descrição: The subscription libraries and vocational, commercial, and charitable libraries which came to flourish between the mid-seventeenth and mid-nineteenth centuries have tended to be charted in conventional histories in recent years on a seamless line of progressive development towards the triumph of the modern public library system. This collection of essays seeks to challenge these assumptions by considering the social exclusions and other cultural conditions which affected libraries and their communities of users.
