Descrição:
Biggs discusses Aelfric's comments about Augustine's Passio Thomae. When returning to the problem as he translated the Passio Thomae, Aelfric may well have been surprised to discover that Augustine had not said what he had claimed he had; his careful quotation of Augustine's exact words as well as his insistence that Augustine had used "his uerbis" suggests that he he recognized something had gone wrong. Yet he was still able to draw the same general conclusion--that Augustine objected to the one incident and not to the work as a whole--because of differing meanings of two of the terms, scriptura and canon, that Augustine had used in the passage he quotes.
