  • Descrição: Anglo-American sculptor Waldo Story (1855-1915) created a significant oeuvre of sculpture in marble, bronze, and stone in England, America, and Italy. The mystery of his exclusion from the annals of art history can be explained by a number of significant interlocking factors: a modernist critical bias against eclecticism and high as opposed to decorative art; chauvinism against an artist of American parentage, English education, and Italian residence who lacked Beaux-Arts or Royal Academy training; and the taint of personal scandal. Storys work is rightfully associated with British Aestheticism. His relationship with James McNeill Whistler is traced and his important works are analyzed.
